VDF Extends Ramadan Sugar offers to security forces, communities
Friday 21 March 2025Vision Development Foundation (VDF) extended their philanthropist gestures to members of the security forces and various Gambian communities, in maintaining the Islamic norms and virtues of Ramadan which allows us to feel the pain of brothers and sisters who live in poverty and cannot afford even the very basic human needs.
Momnodou Turop Darboe- VDF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in his remarks unveiled that a total of 5496 bags of Sugar in 10 Kilos was to be distributed last Friday during the handing over ceremony at the VDF Office in Churchill's Town,Serekunda, as part of their annual Ramadan Sugar and other relief food items donations to communities from various parts of The Gambia.
He added that 2250 Kilograms of diabettes Sugar was also to be distributed on Friday evening, adding that beneficiaries includes: the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF)- 1100, Gambia Police Force- a combination of different Police Units- 511, The Gambia Fire and Rescue Services, Prison, and the Immigration Departments got 100 bags in 10 Kilos each, Foni District - 750, Central River Region (CRR)- 900, Upper River Region (URR)- 1200, totaling to 5469 bags of sugar in 10 Kios, and 2250 Kilos of Diabettes Sugar.
Mr Saihou Fofana- the Communication Director in his introductory remarks said they invited the media, security services and different communities on behalf of the VDF CEO.
Giving a breakdown of the distribution said the 1110 Kilos of bags for Armed Forces- includes Fajara, Yundum, Basse, Farafenni; while total of 1911 bags of sugar was allocated for The Gambia Fire Services, Immigration Department through their headquarters in Abuko, Anti-Crime Unit - 150 bags, Bundung, Tallinding, Kotu, Kairaba, Bundung Borehole Police, Fajikunda, Brikama, and Barra Police Stations, as well the, Mobile Traffic Unit of the Police.
He added that 511 bags of sugar was allocated to various police units; fire services- 100, Prison- 100; and 710 bags for other communities and groups- 735 bags of Sugar and 750 kg of brown sugar for diabettes patients for seven Wards in Foni District. Each Ward will have 75 bags; URR 1200 bags and 750 Kilograms of brown sugar; CRR-900 bags of 10 kilos and 750 kgs of brown sugar, totalling to 5496 bags for different communities.
Meanwhile the beneficiary Wards in Foni include: Foni- Wasadu Ward, Kanilai, Bantanjang, Sintet- Block, Bwiam, Sibanor, Mayork, Somita and 50 Cartons of brown Sugar for diabettes patients.
MrFofana further stated that Communities benefitting directly are- Sare Geda in URR - 50, Sukuta Women Kafo, Aji Demba 20, Farato Women Kafo, Salikenneh, Mandory, Lamin VDC, Daru Busumbala, CRR- 50 Cartons of brown sugar divided among CRR North and South, each 25kgs respectively; Tallinding Islamic, Faraba Kaira Gamo Group, Salikenneh, CRR North and South 900 bags, Touray Kunda, Tallinding Islamic School
Urged recipients to deliver the donated items to target beneficiaries so that they can put smiles on their faces. He encourage that photos and videos of distributions processes accompany the delivery reports, for purpose of transparency.
Hon. Hon. Saihou Jawara- Chairman of Kuntaur Area Council who collected Sugar on behalf of the people of CRR North for his part said every year the VDF used to give them Ramadan Sugar for CRR North, which he came for
He expressed appreciation and prayed that the gesture goes forever for the benefit of his people and the entire country. Referring to CRR North as the poorest, he said the gesture will have great impact, because if an individual has 10 Kilos it will go beyond Ramadan, which the Council appreciates. He Added that most of their people are not buying sugar during Ramadan because of VDF Ramadan Sugar. "We are distributing it to very remote areas that don't have easy access to these gestures, targeting the most vulnerable communities such as Niani, Sami, Nianija, Lower and Upper Saloum Districts. “We are going to distribute it to the right people,” he said
In CRR we have 342 Villages, but will make so he most vulnerable will benefit.
To ensure transparency he said they contacted GRTS to cover the presentation process.
Hon. Hon. Mahamadou Ceesay- Chairman of the Basse Area Council, and Chairperson of Local Government Authorities of The Gambia expressed appreciation, adding that this is the most important engagement we have embarked on during the Ramadan, under the leadership of the CEO- Momodou Turop Darboe.
Said he understands that VDF has been supporting the Council, but this is his first time. He said he witnessed donations of D20,000 to vulnerable families. “We will contact our Village Development Committees to identify the most vulnerable to benefit, and assure that the distribution will be done in a transparent manner, as servants and representatives of the people, considering the fact the Council's principle is transparency and accountability.
